FAQ: How Does a Split Stay Work?

What is a split stay?  A split stay is when, during a single vacation, you stay at more than one Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

GF Resort

Why would you do a split stay? There are multiple reasons why you might consider a split stay. One big reason is experiencing more than one resort.  Maybe you have always wanted to try out Port Orleans French Quarter but the Polynesian is really calling your name.  Cost is another big factor, the deluxe resorts can be expensive and to still get the experience of staying there without committing to the entire vacation you can spread out the costs by staying for a few nights.  Pro tip: always go from less expensive to most expensive in order of stay.  So if you are staying at Pop Century and Contemporary make sure the Contemporary portion is the last part of your stay.  It will be really hard to go from the Polynesian to All Star Sports.

How does a split stay work with tickets?  The easiest way is to make your first room reservation include the tickets for the length of your entire visit.  This will save you money and save you the headache of linking multiple tickets. Any additional resort reservations will be room only.

How does a split stay work with FastPass?  This does not affect FastPass because it is linked to number of days on a park ticket.

How does a split stay work with MagicBands?  You will get a MagicBand for each room reservation you make.  You can choose to customize each reservation and get a MagicBand for each member of your party.  Or you can also choose to decline a set of MagicBands, meaning you will only get one MagicBand for your entire stay.

How does a split stay work with the dining plan? The dining plan expires at midnight the day you check out so you will need to use any credits at the end of each stay.  If you do a split stay you will have the book the dining plan for each room reservation or package.

How do I get from one resort to the next?  You will want to call Bell Services and ask to have your bags picked up and moved to your next resort.  If you only have Disney transportation you will go one of the theme parks and from there you can either enjoy your day at the park, or if you want to go right to your new resort hop on the Disney transportation to the new resort to check in.  Your bags will be unavailable for at least 4 hours, so be sure that anything you need right away or within the next 6 hours that you have with you.  Alternatively, you can check any bags yourself such as carry on luggage or backpacks at luggage services at the new resort.

Is It Worth it?

As a travel agent I get this question pretty frequently, and you may be surprised on what topics this question is asked.   These are my opinions on whether something is worth doing at Walt Disney World.  These are going to be my opinion but my opinion is also based on personal experience as well as data gathered from former clients.

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique: At least once, especially if you have a kid who is crazy about princesses.  I would highly recommend if you are going to drop the cash you will want a reservation at Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom.  The packages can be pretty pricey so to save, bring your own costume and accessories instead of purchasing the full package.

Pirates League: This is very much worth it!  It is a great value and a fun experience for boys and girls.  In fact unlike Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, adults can also get a makeover here too!  They have pirate and mermaid choices and it is a really good value in comparison.

Getting Up Early: YES!  I cannot say yes enough.  The parks are least busy when they first open.  You also get to see some neat stuff like the Welcome Show at the Magic Kingdom.  How can you possibly be the family of the day if you are sleeping all morning?  Some restaurants even offer early breakfast reservations inside the parks which means you have beat the crowds inside the parks.  Go ahead and take that afternoon nap now, you deserve it.

To Try ______ Attraction: Well this is a no-brainer, yes!  You should absolutely try any attraction, ride or show at least once unless you have a medical condition in which it is advised against.  You may never know when you find your new favorite!

Park Hopper Tickets:  In most cases, yes.  This ticket makes your vacation so flexible.  It can be a little work bouncing from park to park but if you are like a lot of people and find Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom to be half day parks this ticket option gives you the chance to save the rest of your day by hopping over to another park.  If you are traveling with really young children it might not be worth the hassle.  But if you are traveling with teens or adults only it is so worth the splurge.  I have travelled with and without the Park Hopper and I will absolutely give up a character meal before I give up with Park Hopper!

tickets

Party Tickets: Yes, especially if you do not have park tickets for that day.  You can enter the Magic Kingdom at 4pm on the party days even when the party doesn’t start until 7pm.  You get special parades and firework shows, extra treats and character meet and greets.  The parks are less crowded as well so you can get on your favorites rides with a minimal wait time!

Refillable Mugs: Yes, but you have to do the math!  So as of 2016 the mugs are $17.  Say you are staying 5 days it would be $3.40 per day, plus you keep the mug.  For me this is very much worth it.  I drink coffee or iced tea in the morning so I would fill up each morning before going to the parks.  Then on an afternoon break I will fill up with Powerade, lemonade or more iced tea.  Then in the evening before bed I’m loading up on more water or Powerade.  Some quick math tells me that I am coming out ahead plus I have a cute souvenir cup to take home!

mugs

Cinderella’s Royal Table:  Not really a good value.  This restaurant located inside Cinderella Castle is a character meal that will run you about $60 a person or 2 Table Service credits.  While you cannot beat the location or atmosphere there are other really great choices for princess character dining (Akershus, 1900 Park Fare) that won’t cost as much and the food is really good.  If you were planning to do this as a special treat or celebration then it may be worth it to do once.

The Dining Plan: Yes, if used correctly!  The dining plan can absolutely save you money if you plan your meals correctly to get the best value.  If you split meals a lot or routinely order something that isn’t an entrée they no, it may not be worth it.  If you like to go on vacation knowing it is all paid for then this is very helpful, no Disney food sticker shock either.  So how do you figure out if it is worth getting?  You will have to do a bit of work checking menu prices and then figuring out if what you would order for each meal plus 2 snacks and if you would use the refillable mug (drinks start at about $3) and then look at the cost per day of the dining plan.

Preferred Rooms: Yes, a thousand times yes! Want to save yourself some walking at the beginning and end of the day?  How about saving yourself a long trip to the pool or food court?  Taking kids to Walt Disney World?  Then get a preferred room, it is worth the price difference from a standard, especially at the Value resorts.

Club Level: This is a it depends.  If you are already on the dining plan it may not be worth it, but if you are looking for a way to plus up a vacation with a great room that has snacks provided a couple times a day plus free drinks?  Then yeah you will want to look at it.  The big seller is that it includes some beers and wine as well as bottled water.  You could make breakfast out of the offerings.  There are also midday snacks offered and hot appetizers in the evenings and desserts in the late evenings!  This can be a fantastic value!  Check out Tara’s Club Level series here for specific resort information.

T-Shirts, Misting Fans, Glowing Trinkets: Nope, save yourself a lot of big bucks and pick up these things prior to going on vacation.  You can find misting fans and the cheap glowing, spinning toys at pretty much any dollar store, Walgreens, Walmart stores for about ¼ of the price.  The same could be said for the shirts you can purchase at Walt Disney World.  Your basic Tshirt will set you back about $25.  Go ahead and check out with Disney Store online, Target, Walmart, Forever 21, Torrid, Hot Topic, H & M, and Etsy just to name a few.

Unique Dining Outside of the Parks – Part II

Tired of the same old restaurants in the parks at Walt Disney World, or just looking for something new?  Check out the first installment check it out here to learn about unique dining options in the Magic Kingdom and Epcot Resort areas. **LINK**

Animal Kingdom Resort Area:
La
ndscape of Flavors located in the Art of Animation is one of the few quick service restaurants on my list of unique dining.  It makes the list due to its lunch and dinner menus where you can custom make any different types of meals such as pasta, omelet, burgers, and salads.  It is fun to custom make your own pasta with sauce and meat choices.  It is sure to win over even the pickiest of eaters.

Dine with Animal Specialist with in the Animal Kingdom Lodge is a 4 course lunch at Sanaa where you can learn all about the animals that are just outside the windows of the restaurant!  This is a truly intimate lunch that is limited to 12 guests.  Once you are finished eating you will head into a secure area for and up close and personal encounter with radiated tortoises.

Wanyama Safari is available only to guests of Animal Kingdom Lodge and features a 90 minute tour with unique vantage points for observing the animals.  It is limited to 12 guests so you will have a very personalized tour.  Prior to the safari you will have a reception with the chefs and cultural representative from Jiko and then conclude your safari with a fabulous dinner at Jiko.  This is a one of a kind dining experience.

Disney Springs:
If you are in the mood for some fantastic food by a famous chef you will want to see Morimoto Asia at Disney Springs.  There is a large sushi menu and plenty of Pan-Asian food for every palate. The menu is extensive with lots of seafood but plenty of steak, noodle and chicken dishes.  Don’t miss this fantastic restaurant.

Wolfgang Puck Express is an easy choice for a single table service credit with amazing food.  People always rave about the macaroni and cheese as well as the bacon wrapped meatloaf.  Not to be mistaken with Wolfgang Puck Grand Café, the express is just a smaller version of the main restaurant by the celebrity chef. Here is a great review we have!

Boathouse

Photo via Disney.com

The Boathouse is another recent addition to Disney Springs, right on the water front.  You cannot beat the location and ambience at Disney Springs and the food is pretty darn amazing too.  They feature American, seafood and steaks and have gotten a reputation for the gigantic Gibsons S’mores Baked Alaska that serves four!

What other restaurants would you add to the lineup of unique offerings outside of a Walt Disney World park?  Let us know!

Alternatives to Popular Dining at Disney

Is your favorite restaurant booked up at Walt Disney World? We have all been there! But here I will give you some alternatives to some of the more popular restaurants at Walt Disney World.

Cinderella’s Royal Table instead try Akershus Royal Banquet Hall. You aren’t eating above the Magic Kingdom, but it is still a castle with a chance to meet some princesses!

100_5812

Cinderella’s Royal Table instead try 1900 Park Fare for dinner. Here you will have a great dinner plus meet Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the stepmother and stepsisters. The character interaction is fantastic and fun, plus you are still a short monorail ride away from Magic Kingdom. Here is our review.

Be Our Guest instead try Chefs de France. This is a grown up version of Be Our Guest with fantastic French food and you will be able to get right in. There is no Beast here but the atmosphere is lovely.

DSCN3594

Le Cellier Steakhouse instead try Yachtsman Steakhouse. Located in the Yacht Club you will find a similar menu without entering a park. Check out Jamie’s review.

Chef Mickey’s instead try Garden Grill. Garden Grill has Mickey, Pluto, Chip, and Dale in this slowly rotating restaurant in The Land Pavilion in Epcot. The food is served family style in a much more laid back atmosphere. Read a review here.

Chef Mickey’s instead try Tusker House. Another great character meal with Mickey and friends located in Animal Kingdom. This menu is more adventurous with a neat atmosphere. With it being inside a park it can get your early entrance to be closer to the attractions.

Is the Disney Dining Plan “Worth it”?

It’s a question we hear a lot. Is the Disney dining plan worth it? Unfortunately this question does not have an easy answer! It depends. For most families the convenience of paying for your meals ahead of time is absolutely worth it. Budgeting for such a variable can be difficult but when “pre-paying” with the meal plan that’s one less thing you need to worry about. I was curious about cost though, so during my last trip I kept track of one of our day’s dining and decided to do a comparison.

Is the Disney Dining Plan -Worth It--

Breakfast

Location: Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory (POFQ)

Three Beignets (snack credit, or $2.99), Coffee (resort refillable mug, or $2.49 out of pocket)

Lunch

Location: Be Our Guest Quick Service (MK)

Carved Turkey Sandwich ($12.99, quick service credit), Soda ($2.99 or included with quick service meal), Chocolate Cream Puff ($4.59 or included with quick service meal)

Dinner

Location: Minnie’s Holiday Dine at Hollywood & Vine

Buffet dinner ($46.99 for adults, or 1 table service credit)

Total cost: $73.04  or $60.64 per night per adult on the Disney Dining Plan. So in this case, we absolutely made out using the Disney Dining Plan! As always your family’s own eating habits will decide if the dining plan is right for you, but you can see that for some, it is a great choice!

What does $4000 get a family of 4 at Walt Disney World?

I really enjoyed this exercise on the podcast so if you missed it you can check it out here: https://dolewhipped.com/2015/03/16/podcast-episode-43-how-far-does-your-money-go-at-disney/

My budget was pretty great, you can take a fantastic vacation for this price. I have four options that all come in under budget. All are for a family of 2 adults, 2 children under 9. One other thing to note is that these prices are rack rate, so there is no promotion or discounts applied.

In the Deluxe category we have two choices!

6 night stay at Wilderness Lodge (standard view) with 7 day Park Hopper tickets for $3,984.76.

4 night stay at Beach Club Villas in a Deluxe Studio 5 day base park tickets, Disney Dining Plan and Memory Maker for $3,980.40.

For Moderates you have what is a pretty typical Disney vacation for many families. This is the kind of trip you might take every 3-4 years and really go all out.

6 nights at Port Orleans Riverside with 7 day Park Hopper and Disney Dining Plan at $3,944.20.

por

I wanted to get a bit silly with the Value Resort and see how far I could take the extras while still getting a full week at the resort. I went with Pop Century as it is the most popular of the Values.

5 nights at Pop Century, Pool View, 6 day Park Hopper with Water Parks Fun and More, Deluxe Dining Plan for $3,985.44.

popcentury Of all these trips the one I would be most likely to take would be the Port Orleans Riverside stay, mostly because it is the longest but still has a great dining plan and park hoppers. The thing I learned most from this was that there really is something at Disney for every budget level and yes you can even go for a couple days and stay under $1,500.

Which of these options is most appealing to you?

Food Trucks at Downtown Disney

IMG_0629

There are lots of changes happening at Downtown Disney — a Starbucks recently opened, the new Marketplace Co-op opened their doors, construction for Disney Springs abounds, and FOOD TRUCKS have arrived!!!  The Disney Dining Plan is accepted at all four of the Downtown Disney Food Trucks, which are:

  • Fantasy Fare “Delightful Dishes from Disney’s Magic Kingdoms Around the World”
  • World Showcase of Flavors “The Best of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival”
  • Namaste Cafe “Tasty Explorations inspired by Disney’s Animal Kingdom”
  • Superstar Catering “Favorite of the Stars of Disney’s Hollywood Studios”

While I wasn’t able to sample any of the offerings this trip (we had reservations at T-Rex and I was stuffed!), I did take a few pictures and grabbed a menu so I could share with our readers!

IMG_0624 IMG_0627

The day we visited, only two of the trucks were there – Fantasy Fare and World Showcase of Flavors.  Both saw a steady stream of visitors and were cranking out some seriously yummy looking dishes.  Here’s the menu for all 4 trucks:

I can’t wait to head back and try the Butter Chicken from Namaste Cafe!  What dish is calling your name?
